    Brief Biography of Khensur Rinpoche

Khensur Lobsang Thubten Rinpoche was born in 1925 in a region of eastern Tibet (Kham) known as the birthplace of many leading contemporary lamas. Rinpoche became a monk at the age of 7 and entered Sera Je Monastery in Lhasa at the age of 18.

In 1959, Rinpoche followed His Holiness the Dalai Lama into exile in India. He continued his monastic studies, attaining his Lharampa geshe degree, the highest degree in the Tibetan system, under extremely challenging conditions in addition to assisting in the planning of the new monasteries being set up in South India.

Rinpoche is an accomplished meditator having completed the three-and-a half year Great Retreat of the Vajrayogini deity. He is a highly respected scholar having been invited by the Dalai Lama to give the oral transmission of the complete Tibetan canon, the Kangyur to an assembly of monks in Dharamsala, an event which occurs only about once a generation and over a period of six months. His title, "Kangyurwa" is a reflection of this great honour. His ability as an administrator is reflected in His Holiness' personal selection of Rinpoche to become the abbot of Sera-Je Monastery in South India.

For the last decade, Rinpoche has, upon the invitation of Lama Zopa Rinpoche, served as the resident geshe of Buddha House in Adelaide, Australia.

    Globalisation and Religion
How are religions reacting to Globalisation? Globalisation, by bringing us into closer contact with each other, and lead to a deeper understanding of 'the other.' But it can also aggravate one of the basic patterns of human group formation. Can we ensure globalisation will make this world a better one for all? How should we Buddhists cope with it?

Life Science Research VS. Universal Laws
Genetically modified (GM) food has been on our dinner table for a long time: seedless grapes, tomatoes, watermelon to name a few. We can now clone rats, goats and even humans - is this good news or bad news? We have recently seen the results of going against nature with the discovery of the Mad Cow disease and who knows what else is in store in the Law of Karma - what does this mean to our survival?

Dr. K. Sri Dhammananda, was born in 1919 in a village called Kirinde in Southern Sri Lanka(Ceylon). He was ordained as a Samanera (novice) monk at the age of 12 and was given the name "Dhammananda" meaning "one who experiences happiness through Dharma". He became a fully ordained monk in 1940 and later received higher ordination at the age of 22. After doing his post graduate studies in India he spent 4 years there spreading the dhamma. In 1952, from about 400 monks, he was selected to go to Malaya (Malaysia) to administer the religious needs of the Sinhalese Buddhists in the country.

In more than forty two years as incumbent of the Buddhist Maha Vihara, our Most Venerable Chief has brought the Buddha world to countless numbers of devotees who otherwise would have had no access to the sublime message of the Supremely Enlightened One.

Besides his talks, the Venerable has been able to reach an even wider audience through his publications which range from the voluminous "Dhammapada" to little five page pamphlets. He has reached all levels of readers from erudite scholar monks to young school children. His whole approach to the exposition of the Dhamma is governed by his deep concern for giving the ancient teachings a contemporary relevance, to show that the Sublime Message is timeless and has meaning that cuts across the boundaries of time, space, race, culture and even religious beliefs.

Venerable Dhammananda's fame as a Dharma speaker has spread to USA, Australia, UK, Europe and the rest of Asia, where he is often invited to speak. He has published numerous books including: Why Worry?, What Buddhists Believe, The Dhammapada.

Ms Angie Monksfield would be one of the MCs, and I have total confidence in her vivacity and spontaneity!! There would also be a very touching light procession ceremony around 7 pm.

Meditation as an Antidote to Consumerism

    Date: Friday 18 May
    Time: 7.15 - 9.45 pm
Venue: Church of Blessed Sacrament, Damien Hall,
    1 Commonwealth Drive Singapore 140001

Today many people find meaning in life through buying and owning things. The market is said to be "wise," and money is God. The steady creep of such values and assumptions is everywhere, even threatening to undermine and subvert the great religious traditions.

Those who retain their faith often find themselves struggling with society, colleagues and family. They even have to contend with elements of their own minds, that have been seduced by consumerism.

Amidst such powerful social and cultural forces, how can we remain true to our convictions? How can we retain our commitment to genuine religious values, compassion, and wisdom? (Ven Santikaro presented this talk at the John Main Conference 2000.)

    Venue:'Marymount' Good Shepherd Convent,

In this workshop, Ven Santikaro Bhikkhu will offer some of the riches of the Buddhist tradition that all people of faith and humanistic conviction can appreciate -- to guide and support us in our life's work of growing beyond egoism.

Ven Santikaro says "Clinging to the events, actions, and experiences of our lives as 'me' and 'mine' draws us into a vortex of self-centeredness and egoistic emotions. These in turn create all the forms of personal and social suffering that trouble humanity, even in our 'advanced' technological times."
