Topics To Be Covered : Participants will be able to gain an insight to the concept and evolution of Pure-Land Buddhism. Upon completion of the workshop, participants will be able to gain a comprehensive understanding of the various schools of thought in Pure-Land Buddhism. The issue of whether to specialise practicing in a particular school of thoughts will be addressed. The Venerable will also touch on the practice of Pure-Land Buddhism in daily life. Jul 15 10.30AM | Buddhist Library | ![]() Title: The Vulnerability of "My Life" Speaker: Venerable Dhammasami Date & Time: 15 July 2001 (Sunday) 10.30am after puja Venue: The Buddhist Library Biodata: Venerable Dhammasami is a Burmese from the Shan State of Myanmar. He was ordained in Sri Mangala Monastery (a branch of the Mahasi Meditation Centre) in Myanmar. He has studied at the leading Burmese Buddhist institutes like Kangyi Pariyatti Institute, Ywang Hwe, Shan State and Sasana Mandaing Pali University, Pegu. In the latter he also lectured in Pali grammar and Abhidhamma for a year. After serving in a missionary capacity in Thailand for a short period, he went to Sri Lanka for postgraduate studies where he obtained two MAs and an M.Phil degrees. He is currently based in the U.K. On this visit to Singapore, he is also conducting a meditation workshop at the Buddhist Library. Besides the talk on 15 July, the Venerable will also be conducting another talk the following Sunday on the 22th of July at the same time and place. |

Choden Rinpoche is also our precious spirit master Kjabje Thuten Zopa Rinpoche's Guru. We are fortunate that Choden Rinpoche agreed to give teaching on his stop over in Singapore. Biography Choden Rinpoche was born in 1933 near Rabten Monastery at Rongbo in eastern Tibet. At the age of three he was recognized as the reincarnation of the previous Rinpoche. At the age of eight Choden Rinpoche entered the Rabten monastery, and at the age of fifteen entered the Sera Je monastery, and studied the main five texts there. Choden Rinpoche was also one of the selected ones from Sera Je to debate with the HH Dalai Lama during HH Dalai Lama's geshe examination. During the Chinese takeover of Tibet Choden Rinpoche stayed in Tibet, and went into total retreat for 19 years in Lhasa, never leaving the room, from 1965 to 1985, and in 1985 Rinpoche was allowed to leave Tibet for India, and has taught for many years students at the Sera Je monastery in India. In 1998 Choden Rinpoche visited Italy and Germany, and in 2000 USA and Taiwan. For more information, see Mandala magazine July-August 2000 issue. |

So hurry! Speakers: ![]() ![]() Dr Lim Kok Kwang is the President of the Singapore Psychological Society and Clinical Psychologist at eMenders. He received his BA in psychology from the University of California at Berkeley (USA) and his PhD in clinical psychology from the University of Tennessee at Knoxville (USA). He later joined the Woodbridge Hospital/Institute of Mental Health and became its first doctoral psychologist since its establishment in 1841. Dr Lim serves as a consulting psychologist for the Victim Restoration Program at the Subordinate Courts (Family Justice Division) and also on the Consultative Committee for the Department of Social Work & Psychology and the Department of Sociology at NUS. He also conducted lectures on psychology at NUS, NTU, Nanyang Polytechnic and Temasek Polytechnic. Dr Lim co-authored the book "Practical Tips for Parents: Nurturing your primary school child" on engagement by The Ministry of Community Development and Sports. He also assisted the Ministry of Health and TCS in the planning of English/Mandarin television and video series on stress management. He was featured in various English and Mandarin mass media programmes to promote mental health to the public. Dr Lim also conducts extensive talks and trainings in Singapore, Malaysia, Taiwan, Australia and Europe to promote psychological healing, optimal human performance, and the development of qualified psychotherapists. Mr Loka Ng, a Malaysian, graduated with a BA (Hons) degree from UKM, Malaysia. He holds office positions in several Buddhist organisations, such as: Deputy President, World Fellowship of Buddhist Youth (WFBY); Vice President, Young Buddhist Association of Malaysia (YBAM); President, Upakara Kalyana Mitta Buddhist Association (UKMBA) and Director, Young Buddhist Foundation of Malaysia. Aug 04 | Full Moon in the Chinese Sixth Lunar Month | Asalha Puja or Dhamma Day.![]() This commemorates the Buddha's first discourse, the Dhamma-Cakka-Pavattana Sutta (the Discourse on the Turning of the Wheel of Truth) in Sarnath (Isipatana, Benares) - the Deer Park , which he gave to the group of five monks with whom he had practised in the forest for many years. Upon hearing this discourse, one of the monks -- Ven. Kondaρρa -- gained his first glimpse of Nibbana, thus giving birth to the Noble Sangha. In 1984, she went for a strict retreat for 3 years, meeting only a Lahouli helper who brought supplies twice a year. After 24 years in India, Ani Tenzin Palmo felt it time to return to the West, so she moved to Italy where she stayed mostly in retirement, but occasionally gave teaching at the local Dharma centers. In 1993, she returned to India and attended a 10-day conference of the Western Buddhist teachers in Dharamsala. This time, the Lamas of her monastery at Tashi Jong requested her to start a nunnery for women in Tibet, and the Himalayan border regions, as well as other women who may wish to meditate. Nuns will be trained in the meditations, a meditational retreat center where women can practice in a conducive environment. Note: The Venerable is in the process of setting up the Dongyu Gatsal Ling Nunnery which is a Tibetan Buddhist nunnery for the education and training of young women from the age of 15 within the Drukpa Kargyu tradition.
