Programme for the celebration includes bathing of Buddha image ( whole day), alms-giving ( at 9.00AM ), Puja ( at 9.45AM ), Burmese food fair ( at 10.15 AM ) and lucky draw ( at 2.00PM ).

Thingyan , from the Sanskrit "Samkranta" or "completely passed over" represents the celebration of the passing over of the Sun from the sign of Pisces to the sign of Aries in the Zodiac. It culminated with the beginning of the Myanmar New Year. It comprises five days : the eve, the descent, the middle, the ascent and the New Year. Water throwing is the most prevalent manifestation of the traditional Thingyan spirit. This is symbolic of washing away bad consequences of the outgoing year and ushering in clear and good happenings for the incoming New Year. Meritorious deeds such as bathing the Buddha image, offering food and ther requisites to monks and other meritorious deeds are performed as well. Of course not forgetting to feast yourself to a sumptuous array of Burmese food. All are invited to join in this auspicious occasion. Do bring along your family members and friends to share the joy and fun.

    Footnote: An Appeal
It has been more than a year since we started operation in the current premises. The Asian economic crisis has exacted; a severe toll on the Library's Fundraising activities. Right now both our Building and Working Funds are at dangerously low levels. As at 31st of December 1999, our Building Fund balance in the bank stood at about $48,000. This is barely enough for 2 months of loan repayment. However, we had never let our financial problems slow us in our Dharma activities. Many of you can bear witness to the phenomenal growth in the variety, intensity and, perhaps more importantly, quality of our Dharma activities. The Buddhist Library's sole reason for existence is the propagation of the wonderful Buddha-Dharma and we will not compromise. But we have reached a desperate situation financially and we hope you will extend your help and support to us so that we may continue with our mission under the leaderships of Bhante Dhammaratana, Venerable Yuan Qing and other members of the sangha. It is our vision that the Library be a place where the power of the Triple Gem shines forth and touches the lives of many. We hope you will share in this vision and give us your support. What is the sound of one hand clapping?!? Does a dog have Buddha-nature? What is your face before you were born?!?

Many of us are undoubtedly baffled by these ridiculous "Zen" questions. No wonder we throw our hands up into the air in exasperation, declaring that Zen is only for Buddhas. How can deluded beings like ourselves understand such profound teachings? FEAR NOT! Fortunately, Zen need not be approached in such an abstract manner. In fact, Zen can be very applicable to our daily lives. Don't believe? Hear from Venerable Shi Yuan Fan and be convinced. NUSBS is co-organizing 2 public talks with Sagaramudra Buddhist Society. The series of 2 talks will be based on "Zen in daily life". If you are interested in attending the talk, please contact Sagaramudra Buddhist Society at email: wangjs@mbox2.singnet.com.sg for details regarding ticket collection. Admission is free. The talks will be in Mandarin. However, English subtitles will be provided.

Biography of Speaker: Venerable Shi Yuan Fan has trained with masters in Korea, Taiwan, Nepal and other countries. He is exposed to various Buddhist schools of thought including Zen, Tibetan Buddhism, and Pure Land Buddhism. Venerable has complied a course of teachings based on his understanding of Buddhism and his many years of practice and experience. The teachings are practical and emphasize the cultivation of the mind through meditation. The purpose of these teachings are aimed at resolving the day-to-day problems faced by society.

Footnote: We will need about 50 ushers for each evening. Please lend a hand and contribute to the propagation of Buddha's teachings. If you are willing to help us out, please email: Shiongwei as soon as possible. Thanks!

Footnote: About the speaker: Prof. Ratan Parimoo is an eminent art historian and teacher from India. He has conducted research on "Jataka Tales and Life of Buddha in Indian Sculpture" over many decades and was awarded the 'Nehru Fellowship 1991-1993' as a result of this research. He has spent many years identifying the Buddhist narratives by comparing them with Lalit Vistara and the Divyavadanam and has taught history of Buddhist Art at Baroda University, India, since 1975.

Excerpt for the talk: Life of Buddha in Indian Sculptures . Most events from the life of Buddha have been depicted in relief sculptures at Sanchi and Barhut in Central India, in the Krishna valley in Andhra Pradesh at Nagarjunakonda and Amaravati and in Gandhara region of northwest India. By 5th century narrative details gave way to iconic single image depictions. In eastern India during the Pala period, images from Buddha's life were depicted in iconic form, often combining the main eight events. In this talk, Prof. Parimoo will identify the various versions of the story and interpretsthe artistic imagination that went in the making of the great Buddhist sculptures..

Ven Dr. Tsering Palmo, the President of Ladakh Nuns Association(LNA) is giving the talk. All are welcome

Footnote: Ven. Dr. Tsering Palmo was born in a village near the capital city of Leh, Ladakh on 2.August.1966. After finishing the Urdu medium School in Ladakh in 1986, she took up Science in Government Degree College for Women in Kashmir for two years. In 1987 she decided to take up traditional herbal medicine and joined the Tibetan Medical College for six years. She graduated from the Tibetan Medical Institute (Men-Tsee-Khang) Dharamsala in 1993, the first Ladakhi nun trained in Traditional Tibetan Medicine.

While still studying the traditional medicine in Dharamsala she became a nun and took ordination from H.H. the Dalai Lama. She worked in Delhi with Dr. Kunga Gyurmey senior Physician to H.H. the Dalai Lama for one year. In 1994 she opened a clinic called Youthok Clinic in Leh in Ladakh.

In 1995, at the fifth Sakaditya (International Buddhist Women Association) conference, held in Ladakh, the public became more aware of the nuns' deprived situation and their plights. In an attempt to provide support and opportunities for the nuns, Ven. Dr. Tsering Palmo established the Ladakh Nuns Association (LNA), a non-sectarian umbrella organisation for the welfare of the Ladakhi nuns, in 1996.

LNA's role is to help nuns realized their potential to study, practice the Dharma, be trained as Dharma teachers and traditional herbal medicine nurse/doctors and in doing so uplift the status of the nuns.

Biography of speaker: Claude AnShin Thomas served in Vietnam from 1966-'67 as a helicopter crew chief. He was shot down on five different occasions and was wounded once, receiving the Purple Heart. Since that time he has been working to heal his wounds from that war: emotionally, mentally and spiritually, and using his experiences to help others. Claude was ordained as a Zen Priest into the Zen Peacemaker Order - the first all western Buddhist Order - in '94 by Roshi Bernie Glassman. Coming to peace with the devastating effects of war and how to find peaceful means for conflict resolution, Claude AnShin shares his reflections in a number of publications, including Shambala Sun, GEO, The Sun, Tikkun, and the Boston Globe., with books published in Italy and Germany and forthcoming from Parallax Press. He speaks internationally in religious and secular communities about cultures of violence and how to heal them, facilitates Mindfulness meditation retreats which provide participants with specific tools to aid them in the process of healing spiritually, emotionally, and psychologically. He has also been invited to be a special retreat leader for veterans within larger mindfulness meditation retreats facilitated by Thich Nhat Hanh. Currently Claude AnShin divides his time between the U.S. and Europe working with cultures of violence, and others, to end violence and establish socially engaged projects. Claude AnShin Thomas walked '94-'95 in an interfaith pilgrimage from Auschwitz to Vietnam. From March to August '98 he facilitated a spiritual pilgrimage across the United States, walking in robes and without money, carrying all his belongings on his back and practicing Takahatsu (alms begging). From August to October 1999 he walked through many concentration camp sites, prisoner of war camps, prisons and other places of suffering conntected to the Second World war in Germany. In the year 2000 he will facilitate a pilgrimage through Serbia, Kosovo and Bosnia Herzegowina.
