    :: About Ajahn Jayanto ::
    Born in Boston in 1967, Ajahn Jayanto grew up in Newton, Mass. and attended the University of Wisconsin at Madison, during which time a period of world travel kindled a great interest in the spiritual life. A meditation class at the Cambridge Insight Meditation Center led him to live for a while at the Insight Meditation Society in Barre, Massachusetts, where he made plans to join the monastic community of Ajahn Sumedho as a postulant at Amaravati Monastery in England in 1989. Taking bhikkhu (monk) ordination at the related Cittaviveka Monastery in 1991, he trained there and at Aruna Ratanagiri Monastery until 1997, at which point he embarked on a period of practice in Thailand and other Asian Buddhist countries. He returned to the UK in 2006, where he lived at Amaravati until moving to Temple in 2014. Since 2009 Ajahn Jayanto has helped to lead the efforts to establish a branch monastery in New England, and he now serves as co-abbot of Temple Forest Monastery https://forestmonastery.org/

    Venerable Hong Choon

    Venerable Hong Choon was ordained under the guidance of Venerable Hui Quan at the age of 16 in Cheng Tian Monastery. During a visit to Venerable Hui Quan, Venerable Master Tai Xu observed Venerable Hong Choon's demeanour and actions, foreseeing his future as an influential figure in Buddhism. He composed a couplet: "Above the sea lies the grandeur of Wan Shi Yan among mountains and forests; While in the human world, Venerable Hong Choon protects and serves all sentient beings."

    Remembered fondly by many as the “compassionate master”, Venerable Hong Choon was responsible for developing the monastery from two simple shrine halls to magnificent architectural monuments spanning the size of ten football fields.

    Let us commemorate Venerable Hong Choon’s legacy on his death anniversary and express our gratitude to him for his contributions to developing Buddhism in Singapore and shaping Kong Meng San Phor Kark See Monastery into the largest monastery in Singapore today.

    宏船老和尚在16岁于承天寺会泉长老的座下出家。太虚大师拜访会泉长老时,见宏船老和尚的言行举止,知日后必成为佛门龙相,因而题联:“海上有山森万石;人间渡世仗宏船”。

    被广称为“慈悲大师”,宏船老和尚于1947年至1990年之前担任光明山普觉禅寺的第二任方丈,并将光明山普觉禅寺从两个殿堂发展成横跨十个足球场大小的寺院。

    让我们在宏船老和尚圆寂周年纪念日这一天表达感恩,感恩他对新加坡佛教界与光明山普觉禅寺作出的贡献。
