Do you grasp the Dhamma like grasping a snake by its tail? Beware it doesn't turn around to bite you! Do you hold on to the raft when you have reached another shore?

The discourse on the Water-Snake Simile is a famous sutta, powerful and compelling in its message. Arittha and the water snake are not unfamiliar to all who treasure and understand the Pali Canon. It is one of the most forceful, captivating and visually impactful suttas you can find.

Join Bhante Buddharakkita to find out more about this exquisite sutta. To do justice to it, Bhante will be examining it in detail over an exhilarating 4 weeks. Don't miss out!

    ANGER IS WITHIN ME

“A monk decides to meditate alone. Away from his monastery, he takes a boat and goes to the middle of the lake, closes his eyes and begins to meditate. After a few hours of unperturbed silence, he suddenly feels the blow of another boat hitting his. With his eyes still closed, he feels his anger rising and, when he opens his eyes, he is ready to shout at the boatman who dared to disturb his meditation.

But when he opened his eyes, saw that it was an empty boat, not tied up, floating in the middle of the lake … At that moment, the monk achieves self-realization and understands that anger is within him; it simply needs to hit an external object to provoke it. After that, whenever he meets someone who irritates or provokes his anger, he remembers; the other person is just an empty boat. Anger is inside me.”

The Buddhist Library Family Day Funfair has been the annual fundraising event that keeps the Library’s programmes & activities running. This event is a collaborated effort by all its members and supporters, enabling the Library to provide free Dhamma courses for anyone who is willing to attend.

This year we are facing one of the worst pandemic (COVID 19) that the world has ever seen. Millions of lives were taken and economy has been adversely affected. However, it is times like this that we must keep our faith in the Buddha and practise the Dhamma to overcome this obstacle. Our Bhantes will be conducting a special blessing throughout the month of November & December, and we hope all our members and supporters will continue to support us for this online version of fundraising event.

The funds raised for this event will also help to cover costs incurred due to recent renovation works in the 2nd level of the Buddhist Library. The renovation works aims to facilitate ease of cleaning and sanitizing of our auditorium and seminar rooms, providing a safer environment for us to practise in. We also like to use this opportunity to extend our help to the needy by raising funds for the elderly in Bright Hill Evergreen Home who are in need of essential items.

Dec 01By Kong Meng San Monastery
Kong Meng San Phor Kark See Monastery

According to the Sutras, "Kong Meng San (光明山)" is the name of Avalokiteshvara Bodhisattva’s (Guan Yin Pu Sa) Pureland. In the Chapter of "Entering the Dharma Realm" in the Flower Garland Sutra, it was recorded that the youth Sudhana (Shan Cai Tong Zi) had visited 53 great spiritual teachers and his 27th teacher was Avalokiteshvara Bodhisattva who taught him the practice of great compassion. As a mark of respect for this significant encounter, KMSPKS conducts the Great Compassion Obstacle Elimination Ceremony on the 27th day of every lunar month.

The second part of its name, "Phor Kark See (普觉寺)", is translated as "the Monastery of Universal Awakening". This name serves as a reminder "to abide by the right understanding of the Dharma, to benefit all sentient beings, and to realise great liberation and Buddhahood."
