Biography of Sayadaw U Rajinda



Sayadaw U Rajinda was born on 30 November 1949 in Shwebo District, Myanmar. He became a novice monk (Samanera) at the age of 10 and then a fully ordained monk (Bikkhu) of Theravada Monastic Order at the age of 20.

After receiving the degree, Sasanadhajha Dhamma Cariya in Pali Scriptures in 1983, he taught Buddhist Scriptures for 2 years in Ye-U Town. This religious service was done as his gratitude to his learned teachers from Ye-U.

In 1986, the Sayadaw went to the Main Mahasi Meditation Centre in Yangon to practise Vipassana meditation, strictly following the techniques devised by Mahasi Sayadaw. He then served at the Centre for 2 years in various capacities under the supervision of Sayadaw U Panditabhivamsa.

He was sent to Penang in 1990 to teach meditation at the Malaysia Buddhist Meditation Centre, where he served for 3 years. He came to Singapore as the Religious Advisor to the Buddha Dhamma Mandala Society in 1993. He was also instrumental to the birth of the Vipassana Meditation Centre in Singapore. Since 1999 he has been providing religious support to Bodhirama Estate (KKB), a branch of the Selangor Buddhist Vipassana Meditation Society.

At the request of many oversea devotees to conduct meditation sessions, Sayadaw has traveled to Malaysia, Indonesia, Australia and the USA.

Sayadaw founded the Satipatthana Meditation Centre (SMC) in April 2004, and has been serving as its Religious Advisor since. He also serves as the religious advisor to Shwe-pyi-aye Meditation Centre in Insein, Yangon and acted as a patron to the free medical clinic for Sanghas at Khinmakan Monastery in Mandalay. Recently, he has completed a project of building a free medical clinic for the people of Thawutthi Village, his birthplace.
