Biography of Venerable B. Dharmaratana



Venerable B. Dharmaratana is the founder and advisor of Buddhist Library. He is also the advisor to Sagaramudra Buddhist Society, Singapore Buddhist Mission and National University of Singapore Buddhist Society.

The Venerable came to Singapore in 1971 and has been doing Buddhist work here since then. He conducts Buddhist meditation courses, Dharma talks and courses at Buddhist Library and other Buddhist organisations. He has also taught Buddhism at St. Patricks' School for 12 years.

Venerable Bellanwila Dhammaratana, Chief Incumbent of Bellanwila Rajamaha Viharaya and the founder of Buddhist Research Society and Buddhist Library, Singapore has been appointed as the Chief Sangha Nayaka of Singapore by Kotte Sri Kalyani Samagridhamma Maha Sangha Sabba.

Venerable Dhammaratana is the senior pupil of the late Venerable Bellanwila Sri Somaratana Nayaka Thera, former Chief Incumbent of Bellanwila Rajamaha Vihara. He is a student of Vidyalankara Pirivena and is a graduate of Vidyalankara University. After graduation, he served as the Deputy Principal and Principal at two prestigious seats of learning Sunethradevi Pirivena and Paramadhamma Chetiya Pirivena respectively.

Venerable Dhammaratana left Sri Lanka for Dhammaduta activities to Singapore in 1973 on the invitation of Venerable M. Mahavihara.

He founded the Buddhist Research Society and established the first ever Buddhist Library in Singapore.

Conducting regular Dhamma classes, lectures and seminars are the main activities of the Buddhist Library.

Venerable Bellanwila Dhammaratana also founded the Paramita Buddhist Centre at Kadugannawa with the assistance of Buddhists in Singapore.
